OMG... thing is I do remember doing something equal as resounding the chant of We are the Mods, we are the Mods, we are we are we are the Mods...

In 1986 whilst a teenage mod in my final year of High School we went to Alton Towers; being a Mod was pretty prolific still in the mid 1980s and me and my fellow modettes were there...

We boarded the ride of the Pirate Ship and unbeknown to us there were a load of 'rockers' behind us how also boarded; they had seeked us out as we crossed the park.

We were all on - Modettes one end and rockers the other; usual guys seemed to have fled as before you knew it, we were singing the chant of We are the Mods, we are the Mods, we are we are we are the Mods and the Rockers were chanting out 'we will get ya, we will get ya.. ' and how shit are the Mods etc...'.

It was like a real life Quadrophenia in the modern world... we are all modernists but this seemed like the 1960s all over again and boy how proud we were...

Fortunately for us the Rockers were all mouth and no trousers though we did run like feck when we got off, but we were elated... we had sung our heartflet chant, been proud and are still as proud today...

UP the Mods!!!!

Best

Well even the word "hipster" is dubious and by no means new... Kerouac used it in On the Road to denote "college kids" and "coffee shop faggots". The hippies (source: my dad) used that term for Kerouac and his ilk (the Beatniks, throwing in the requisite irony). Now it's a term used to describe someone as fashionable and trendy; wearing clothes explicitly created for and sold to that subculture (if you will) in today's consumer oriented society.

But is it really "today's" society that's consumer oriented? Hunter S. Thompson goes on and on about the commodification of hippies not four years after the movement started...

And now the nerds, the geeks (but not the dorks). Are they really wearing explicit and primary colors? Is there a pride to be found in their ostracism, as was the case for the original greasers, gangbangers and artists, or are they merely yuppies, repackaged and dressed-up for the Oughts?
